Hundreds of feral cats roam the woods and stay behind restaurants and
horse farms throughout the Township of West Milford, creating a
problem that the West Milford Animal Shelter Society WMASS with
endorsement by the Township Council is addressing.
The Council has introduced an ordinance allowing for a "Trap, Neuter,
Return" (TNR) program for feral cats. There will be a public hearing
on the ordinance before a final vote for adoption is taken on Dec. 16.
The ordinance describes a feral cat as one who is completely or
substantially unsocialized to humans. "The usual and consistent
temperament of a feral cat is extreme fear and resistance to contact
with humans. Feral cats are (1) born in the wild. (2) offspring of
tame or feral cats and not socialized. Or (3) formerly tame cats who
have been abandoned and have reverted to an untamed state."
